A 1930s Home Gets a Modern Makeover by Studio Burgoon
A 1930s house gets a modern refresh with Studio Burgoon
This 1930s semi-detached house in south London was in need of a refresh. The homeowners, a couple with two young children, approached Studio Burgoon to help them create a space that was both stylish and functional for family life.
The brief was to open up the ground floor, creating a better flow between the kitchen, dining, and living areas. The architects also needed to add a side return extension to maximize space and light.
The original house was typical of its era, with small, compartmentalized rooms. The dark and cramped kitchen was separated from the rest of the house. The architects removed the dividing walls to create a light-filled open-plan space perfect for modern living.
A key challenge was connecting the new extension with the original house seamlessly. The architects achieved this by using similar materials and finishes throughout, creating a cohesive and harmonious feel.
In the kitchen, pale oak cabinetry complements the Carrara marble countertops and backsplash. Black accents in the lighting and hardware add a touch of sophistication. The kitchen island provides ample workspace and a casual dining area.
The dining area features a bespoke oak table and chairs, perfectly proportioned for the space. A large window overlooks the garden, flooding the room with natural light.
The living area is furnished with comfortable sofas and armchairs, creating a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. A fireplace provides a focal point for the room.
Throughout the house, the architects used a muted color palette of whites, grays, and blues. This creates a sense of calm and serenity.
The side return extension allowed for the creation of a utility room and downstairs WC, essential for a busy family. This clever use of space maximized the functionality of the house.
The project is a testament to how thoughtful design can transform a traditional house into a modern, functional, and beautiful home.
Key elements of the redesign include:
- Open-plan living space
- Side return extension
- Pale oak cabinetry
- Carrara marble countertops
- Muted color palette
The result is a light-filled, airy, and spacious family home that perfectly balances style and practicality.
