Inflation Dishevels San Diego Hair Salons
San Diego Hair Salons Disheveled by Inflation
A trip to the salon can be a transformative experience, but for both customers and stylists, the rising cost of everything from shampoo to rent is changing the landscape of the hair industry. In San Diego, several salon owners are grappling with the challenges presented by inflation.
“Everything’s gone up, you know, our back bar products, color, foils, even rent,” said Shawna Balistreri, owner of Salon B in North Park.
Balistreri explained that she has been in business for 22 years. She loves her job, but navigating these increased costs has been difficult.
She has had to raise prices, implement a surcharge, and adjust her business practices to absorb some of the added expenses.
According to the Professional Beauty Association, 80% of salon owners have raised their prices in the past year, and more than half are considering further increases to cope with inflation. This industry trend is being felt by stylists and clients alike.
“It’s definitely impacted us,” said stylist Brooke Boling. “I mean, we’re all having to raise our prices.”
Clients like Susan Taylor are also feeling the pinch. She said that she tries to support local businesses, but rising prices everywhere make it harder to maintain her usual hair care routine.
“I’ve noticed it everywhere. I’m paying more and getting a little bit less. I feel like it’s just a matter of time before I have to cut back completely," said Taylor.
As inflation continues to impact the beauty industry, both salon owners and their customers are finding ways to adapt. Some are spacing out appointments, while others are exploring more affordable product options.
