Taiwanese culinary diplomacy shines at Milan food fair.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) founder Morris Chang stated on Tuesday (Dec. 5) that globalization and free trade are "almost dead," and the U.S.' efforts to rebuild domestic chip production will prove "very expensive and futile." Chang believes that while the U.S. possesses some advantages in design and design automation software, it lacks the talent pool necessary for substantial semiconductor manufacturing expansion. He emphasized the significant cost difference between chip production in the U.S. and Taiwan, estimating a 50% higher cost in America. Chang made these remarks during a lunch event hosted by the Brookings Institution.
