EVKS Elangovan wins Erode East bypoll.
Congress Wins Erode East Bypoll
The Congress party's EVKS Elangovan has secured victory in the Erode East Assembly by-election, defeating the AIADMK candidate, K.S. Thenarasu, by a significant margin.
Elangovan won by over 66,000 votes after 22 rounds of counting. This victory marks a significant boost for the Congress party in Tamil Nadu. The bypoll was necessitated by the death of Elangovan's son, Thirumahan Everaa, who was the sitting MLA.
The DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, which includes the Congress, backed Elangovan's candidature. This win strengthens their alliance and provides momentum ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The by-election saw a high voter turnout. The counting process was closely monitored, and the results were declared amidst tight security.
This is the second bypoll victory for the DMK-led alliance since it came to power in 2021.
The defeat is a setback for the AIADMK, which is trying to regain its footing after losing the 2021 Assembly elections.
