Pastel Blue Home Office: A Design Regret
Why my pastel blue home office didn't work – and the color I chose instead
I’ve always been drawn to calming colors, especially in spaces where I need to focus. So, when it came to decorating my home office, I envisioned a tranquil oasis of pastel blue. Light, airy, and serene – what could go wrong?
Turns out, quite a bit. While the color looked beautiful on the paint chip, once it was up on all four walls, the reality was far from the dream. The room, which doesn't receive a huge amount of natural light, felt cold, uninviting, and surprisingly small. Instead of the calm productivity I’d hoped for, I felt a constant sense of dreariness. It wasn't the calming home office decor I'd envisioned.
The biggest issue was the lack of warmth. Pastel blue, especially in a north-facing room like mine, can feel stark and chilly. It emphasized the lack of natural light, making the space feel closed in and unwelcoming. The room, intended to be my productive sanctuary, became a place I actively avoided.
The lesson learned? Don’t rely solely on paint chips. Test the color in your space, on a large enough area, and at different times of the day to see how it truly interacts with the light. This is especially important in rooms with limited natural light, where cool colors can easily fall flat.
After admitting defeat, I repainted the office in a warm, off-white shade with a hint of gray. The transformation was remarkable. The room instantly felt brighter, larger, and significantly more inviting. The neutral backdrop now allows my colorful artwork and accessories to pop, creating a space that feels both calming and inspiring.
While pastel blue might be a lovely choice for some spaces, it highlighted the importance of considering the specific characteristics of a room – its size, light, and intended purpose – before committing to a color. In the end, my pastel blue experiment taught me a valuable lesson about the power of paint and the importance of choosing the right shade to create the desired atmosphere.
